Prevent Relapse in Opioid Use Disorder

Prevent Relapse in Opioid Use Disorder

by Max Menius / Wednesday, 04 June 2025 / Published in Addiction in Media, Addiction Recovery, Information for Parents, Methadone, Opioid Recovery, Prevention and Intervention, Technology in Addiction Treatment

I’m excited to inform you that ADS has been selected to participate in a pilot study to develop a relapse prevention tool for opioid use disorder!

The collaboration will work to define and collect physiological signals and behavior traits that can (1) predict relapse and (2) be measured by wearable technologies, including heart rate, insomnia, physical inactivity, and physiological stress. Smartphones will also be used to capture mental health characteristics such as social isolation, patient-reported anxiety, and depression.

These data points will be used to train a tool to prevent opioid relapse. Over the next five months, the ADS team will recruit patients for a pilot study to test our approach and ensure that our methods obtain optimal quality data to develop the relapse prevention tool. We are hoping to launch this project by the end of May.

We’re inviting you to join a new health study at Alcohol and Drug Services of Guildford. This study is for people living with opioid use disorder (OUD), and you may be able to take part in this important research.

Participation is completely voluntary, but it’s a chance to be part of something meaningful that could help make the future of OUD treatment better!

Why join the study?
• Help researchers find early signs of OUD relapse and improve care for others in the future.
• Receive an Oura Ring and Fitbit to track and learn about your own health by tracking important wellness areas like sleep and physical activity in real time. If a level of study activities are completed, you can keep these tools even after the study ends!
• As a thank you for your time, we will provide gift card incentives for completed study activities.

Participation in the study includes wearing the FitBit and Oura ring daily for 1 baseline week and 3 months, answering short daily and bi-weekly digital surveys on your smartphone, and getting weekly urine screening tests. Researchers will take measures to protect your privacy and keep your study data secure.

 Eligibility criteria:

  1. Age: Adults aged 22 or older
  2. Early outpatient care: Within six months of starting outpatient care for OUD. Patients readmitted into outpatient care will be eligible for the study, if they are within six months of readmission.
  3. MOUD: Currently receiving medication for OUD, including but not limited to buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone.
  4. Language proficiency: Able to read, write, and speak English at a level sufficient to comprehend study-related materials and complete research activities.
  5. Technology: Owns a smartphone that supports Bluetooth 4.0 and has an operating system compatible with selected consumer sDHTs, specifically iOS 16.4 or higher, or Android 10 or higher.
  6. Comorbidities: Does not have a medical diagnosis of, and is not receiving treatment for, chronic pain. All other comorbidities and concomitant medication, except for chronic pain, will be allowable for participation and captured in the printed case report form by clinical staff.
