The CBS-affiliate station out of Connecticut, WTVR, reported this week that a new street drug is being sold in the United States and Canada. It is called W-18 and is a synthetic opioid first developed in a Canadian lab in 1981. Emergency medical personnel have stated that a small amount of the drug is powerful enough to kill someone. The drug is said to be approximately 100 times more potent than fentanyl. Fentanyl has been tied to numerous overdose deaths and was covered extensively in the news recently.

W-18 was supposedly locked away for years and not picked up commercially by pharmaceutical companies for any medial purpose due to its high risk potential. WTVR report that the drug surfaced recently when Chinese labs began manufacturing the drug and selling it online.

“We’re looking at this next drug w-18 that’s coming out. This could be disastrous. This could be the next nuclear war basically. You’re going to see a lot of lives lost,” said Poquonnock Bridge Fire Dept. Chief Joe Winski.

Below is a WSFB news segment highlighting this drug’s danger …
